DETROIT (WWJ) — Detroit City Councilman Scott Benson was arraigned on charges of being “super drunk.” on Thursday.

Benson was found by police slumped over the steering wheel on the Southfield service drive near 8 Mile back in late June. Southfield Police said Benson’s blood-alcohol level was 0.244. The new “super drunk” laws means Benson faces 180 days in jail — nearly twice the penalty for regular drinking and driving.

Benson, who represents District Three, was found with his car still running, according to police — idling on the Southfield Freeway service drive.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and City Council President Brenda Jones released the following statement back in June regarding the matter

“We have recently learned that misdemeanor charges are being sought against Councilman Scott Benson. We have no first-hand facts about the matter and we will not speculate. Instead we will let the judicial system proceed in its normal course. In the meantime, we will remain focused on getting the city’s business done.”
